Midland, MI - June 30, 2006
As part of The Dow Chemical Company’s commitment to leadership and continuous improvement in the area of chemical security, Dow has set up an Independent Advisory Panel as a collaborative effort to help understand the roles of Industry, government and the public in a challenging security environment.
The Independent Advisory Panel on Chemical Security will be chaired by former Congressman and 9/11 Commission Vice-Chairman Lee Hamilton and will also include distinguished experts around the world from disciplines including physical security, manufacturing process safety, transportation and supply chain security, crisis management, and emergency response.
“We have taken aggressive steps to improve our security not only in the United States, but everywhere in the world we operate,” said Gary Veurink, Vice President of Manufacturing and Engineering for Dow. “Forming this advisory panel is a next step in our efforts to help drive security improvements across our industry.”
The purpose of the Independent Advisory Panel is to:
- Offer an outside-in, multi-disciplinary perspective on the Industry’s approach to global security;
- Evaluate Industry’s current security initiatives against best practices;
- Identify and frame geopolitical trends and other global developments that affect the Industry’s security concerns and strategies;
- Identify additional considerations to enhance security efforts, including government partnerships, public policy advocacy, and emerging best practices; and
- Identify areas in which an Industry leader can be a catalyst for the Industry to bring security approaches or practices to government, industry, and other key security stakeholders.
“We demand more of ourselves. When it comes to security, we never consider our job done,” said David Kepler, Senior Vice President, Shared Services, Environment Health and Safety, and Chief Information Officer. “We are honored to be working with such distinguished experts as we continue to drive security improvements -- not just for Dow but the entire industry.”
Joining Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Kepler, and Mr. Veurink on the panel include:
Dr. Richard Falkenrath, Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution
Dr. Hau L. Lee, Co-Director, Global Supply Chain Management Forum, Stanford University
