Cosman Recognized for Helping Set Industry Standard for Cyber Security

Midland, MI - October 10, 2007

Eric Cosman, a Manufacturing and Engineering employee of The Dow Chemical Company, has received the 2007 Standards and Practices Award from ISA. The award is in recognition of his leadership role on the ISA99 committee, which is responsible for the development of standards for the electronic or cyber security of systems that are used to monitor and control industrial processes and equipment. Cosman, an Engineering Solutions architect is the principal editor of the first of four standards under development. This standard is expected to be approved by the American National Standards Institute by late October.

Currently, there are no generally accepted industry standards that define the minimum requirements for the cyber security of industrial automation systems across industry sectors. Cosman’s work is part of the chemical industry’s commitment to contribute Dow’s expertise to cross-sector standards that will first be adopted in the United States and eventually be accepted internationally.

“Eric’s leadership is a great example of how the self-initiative of individuals can bring about positive change for both our company and the broader industry. Because of his exceptional efforts, a new standard for cyber security in industrial automation systems has been set,” said Mike Gambrell, executive vice president, Basic Plastics and Chemicals, Manufacturing & Engineering. “We talk about the power of the Human Element to effect positive change in our world and that is exactly what Eric has done.”

“Dow is committed to leading the industry in setting safe and sustainable standards for cyber security,” says Dave Kepler, senior vice president, chief sustainability officer, chief information officer, Shared Services. “Eric’s work exemplifies the proactive approach we are taking to develop and implement these standards to protect a critical part of the U.S. infrastructure and to lay the groundwork for protecting this infrastructure around the world.”
