Golden Torch Award Strengthens NSBE Relationship

Midland, MI - February 26, 2008

Dow Promise was recently announced the winner of the 2008 Golden Torch Award for Corporate Community Service from the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). The Corporate Community Service Award recognizes one company with a demonstrated investment in the African-American community, through pioneering initiatives in community leadership and encouraging African Americans to pursue careers in engineering and the sciences.

Dow Promise is a volunteer initiative that mobilizes resources for the benefit of economically and educationally challenged African-American communities near Dow sites. Created in 2000 by the African American Network (AAN), the Dow Promise program supports Dow’s commitment to corporate citizenship and Diversity & Inclusion, and aligns with our vision, values, and goal of “Contributing to Community Success.”

The contributions of Dow employees have built the grassroots effort into a feasible and sustainable program with a positive impact on educational preparedness and success of at-risk children. Over 200 active and retired employee volunteers from Dow’s California, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas and West Virginia locations have logged thousands of hours each year serving young people and adults identified as facing educational and/or economic challenges. Dow Promise has also invested more than $1.5 million in local communities over the last five years. By engaging Dow employee volunteers and using grants from The Dow Chemical Company Foundation, Dow Promise strengthens the quality of life for residents in communities where Dow operates, while also enhancing Dow’s reputation.

“We’re extremely honored that Dow Promise has been recognized by NSBE, a long-standing, valuable partner of our company,” said Earl Shipp, group president, Basic Chemicals and NSBE executive sponsor. “This Award is a wonderful example of how the Human Element can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors. The Golden Torch Award is top-level recognition of our commitment to sustainable and balanced business success. I am grateful to the many passionate Dow Promise volunteers who are living our core values of Integrity and Respect for People in our communities. It is these volunteers who made this Award possible.”

The success of the Dow Promise program will be further recognized on March 22 at the 11th Annual NSBE Golden Torch Awards, the closing of the NSBE Annual National Convention in Orlando, Florida.
