Liveris Receives Honorary Doctorate from University of Queensland; Named Alumnus of the Year

Midland, MI - December 15, 2005

Andrew N. Liveris, president, chief executive officer and chairman-elect of The Dow Chemical Company, has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Liveris, who earned a bachelor's degree with first-class honors in Chemical Engineering from the University in 1975, has also been named Alumnus of the Year.

The honors, according to University officials, were presented in recognition of Liveris' distinguished career and his ongoing contribution to the University.

According to Professor Jim Litster, head of the University's School of Engineering, "Andrew is possibly the most distinguished engineering alumnus of this University of any era."

Litster noted that Liveris has continued to take a strong interest in the University. "He has assisted us in our student recruitment in engineering programs and is keen to play a significant role in building a strong engineering alumni for this University, particularly with our many alumni working in the U.S.," he said.

In accepting the awards, Liveris commented "When a great institution like this one, says, 'We recognize your accomplishments', my thought is always the same - none of it would have happened without the people who helped me in virtually every step of my life. This recognition is as much theirs as much as it is mine."

He expressed his appreciation to the University, noting that "there has been no time in my life that I didn't call on the people I met here at the University." He added, "They gave me advice and guidance in those early years after graduation and I have maintained contact with them throughout my career at Dow."

Liveris was born in Darwin, Australia. His career with Dow began in 1976 in Australia and has spanned manufacturing, sales, marketing, new business development and management. He has spent the bulk of his career in Asia, where he was general manager for the company's operations in Thailand, and later head of all Asia-Pacific operations.

He has been a member of Dow's Board of Directors since February 2004 and was recently elected chairman of the board, effective April 1, 2006.

Liveris serves on the Board of Directors of Citigroup, Inc. He is an officer of the American Chemistry Council, the industry's trade association, and is a member of the following organizations: the American Australian Association, a non-profit group dedicated to education involving both bi-lateral and international issues; the Business Council; the Business Roundtable; the Detroit Economic Club; the G100, an association of leading CEOs; the International Business Council; the National Petroleum Council; the Société de Chimie Industrielle; the U.S.-China Business Council; and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of The Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Liveris resides in Midland, Michigan, where he serves on the Board of Trustees of the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation. He has a life-long and active interest in science, math, astronomy and sports.
