Dow Named 2005 ACC Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Award Winner

Midland, MI - December 13, 2006

The Dow Chemical Company is one of 11 American Chemistry Council (ACC) member companies to receive a 2005 Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Award for its outstanding efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gases. Dow was selected for its USA operations energy efficiency and conservation program, which has allowed for a 42 percent improvement in energy efficiency worldwide in the company’s operations since 1994.

“Dow is honored to be recognized with an ACC Responsible Care Award for its important role in reducing energy intensity and promoting conservation,” said John Dearborn, Energy Business Vice President, The Dow Chemical Company.  “As one of the largest chemical producers in the world, Dow has both a responsibility and a significant self interest in discovering alternative ways to help solve the energy challenges that have been plaguing our nation for the past several years. Our 2015 sustainability goals, published late last year, take our efforts a step further as we continue to invest in responsible choices when it comes to the products we make, the sciences and technologies we develop, the alliances we build and the way we run our operations.”

Through their efforts, the companies receiving awards have cumulatively saved enough energy to power a metropolitan area the size of South Bend, Indiana, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to 45 cars, according to an ACC press release.

“Since 1970, Responsible Care companies have reduced fuel and power energy consumption per unit of output by 46 percent,” said Jack N. Gerard, president and CEO of ACC, in the press release. “In the past five years, these companies have reduced their greenhouse gas intensity by more than 26 percent. These are tremendous accomplishments for such as energy-intensive industry.”

Other recipients of the 2005 ACC Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Awards include Afton Chemical Corporation, BASF Corporation, Cytec Industries Inc., DuPont, Eastman Chemical Company, ExxonMobil Chemical Company, Merck & Co., Inc., Occidental Chemical Corporation, Rohm and Haas Company, Texas Petrochemicals LP. The companies will be recognized at the March 2007 Responsible Care Conference and at the May 2007 meeting of the Industrial Energy Technology Conference.
