Dow Brazil Recognizes Suppliers of Logistic Services for Reduction in Incidents and Best Practices in the Distribution Area

Sao Paulo, Brasil - September 11, 2009

A global reference in responsible care and sustainable practices in the chemical industry, Dow promoted this year its 8th edition of the DowGOL Award, an initiative created with the objective of recognizing and encouraging safe transportation and storage operations provided by the Company’s suppliers. In total, 13 logistics suppliers were recognized for their good practices during 2008, representing the largest number of companies recognized in one edition of the award.

The – G – O – L – letters refer to the words "Guiding, Observing and Leading", summarizing the commitment to continuous improvement in terms of personnel, equipment, transportation conditions and facilities from carriers, terminals and warehouses contracted by Dow all over Brazil. The award is divided into four different categories: Carriers, Warehouses, Marine Terminals and Distributors. More than 30 companies in the logistic services area competed for DowGOL in this 8th edition.

Douglas Araújo, leader of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) for Dow’s Logistic Chain in Latin America, noted that DowGOL Award is already a well-established event in the sector and celebrates the commitment of all suppliers to meet the stringent safety requirements established by Dow. "More than a competition among the companies, the Award is a way of encouraging our suppliers to be aligned with the strict safety requirements set by the Company. We are pleased to award more and more partners in every new edition since this means we are disseminating the vision and practices of excellence and responsibility that characterize Dow’s operations worldwide

The companies that apply for the award cannot record serious accidents throughout the year and have to follow the rules established by the Responsible Care® Program, voluntary initiative of the global chemical industry, managed in Brazil by Abiquim (the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association), that aims to promote the maximum safety in all phases in the manufacturing, distribution, use and disposal of chemical materials. Additionally, distributors must adopt the Prodir Program from Associquim (the Brazilian Association of Chemical Products Distributors); and carriers must be certified by the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality System (SASSMAQ), in addition to participating in Programa Olho Vivo na Estrada ("Sharp Eyes on the Road"), a partnership among Abiquim, Abiclor (Brazilian Association of Alkalis, Chlor-Alkali and Derivatives) and SEST (Transportation Social Service)/SENAT (National Service of Transportation Learning).

Partnership announced

During the DowGOL 2009 Award ceremony, Dow announced its membership to Na Mão Certa ("In The Right Hand") Program, an initiative from Brazil Childhood Institute (WCF) that aims to mobilize governments, businesses and nonprofit organizations to fight more effectively against the exploitation of children and teenagers in Brazilian highways.

"We adhered to Na Mão Certa Program because we want to extend Dow's commitment to social responsibility across the whole Supply Chain. WCF’s cause is very valuable and highly relevant to combating a problem that unfortunately is still common on many Brazilian roads," said Douglas Araujo.
