By 2030 the world’s population is set to exceed eight billion creating 1.7 billion more people to feed and increasing calorie demand by 50 percent. Currently, more than one billion people are malnourished in the world creating an urgent need to increase crop yields and supply products to those in need.

While this is a daunting task, Dow has solutions to be part of the answer to this pressing global challenge. Dow is focused on mastering science and technology through creating both chemical and biological solutions that increase agricultural productivity.

Chemical Solutions Protect Crops from Damage

Dow has a long history of developing advanced chemical solutions for weed, insect, and disease control across all major crop segments.

Aminopyralid, one of our newer herbicide innovations for ranchers and farmers around the world, expands our leadership in the range and pasture market segment as its new generation active ingredient is effective at very low rates as compared to currently registered herbicides with the same mode of action. We’re also introducing this molecule in cereals and the growing oilseed rape markets.

Spinetoram is a new insecticide that offers broad spectrum control in significant fruit and vegetable markets such as apples, and its technical merits make it the best of the next generation of products. In fact, it was a winner of the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on behalf of the White House.

Another new product helping protect crops is pyroxsulam herbicide, initially launched in the cereals market to provide cross-spectrum control with superior activity on large broadleaf weeds.

Biological Solutions Help Deliver High Yields

Dow also has one of the most comprehensive collections of unique and diverse germplasm in the industry, enabling us to develop seed technologies for the ultimate in crop yields, enhanced animal performance, and improvements in healthy eating to name a few.

HERCULEX®Insect Protection offers top-performing hybrids to reach their maximum yield potential by combining high-yielding genetics with consistent, season-long control of European corn borer, corn rootworm, western bean cutworm, black cutworm and fall armyworm.

A key technology example is SmartStax™ that provides two modes of action for above and below ground pests. This advancement in insect management, “pyramiding” different genes for control of the same target insect, will deliver increased yields to farmers through the broadest spectrum of insect control ever available and reduced refuge acres.  Dow is introgressing SmartStax into the latest genetics developed through its global breeding program.

Dow also is bringing new herbicide tolerant trait technology to market. DHT will enable farmers to continue to farm the way they want with a glyphosate-tolerant cropping system.  With the advent of weed shifts and weed resistance due to the broad use of glyphosate, a cost effective and broad spectrum product is essential to improve and enhance weed control. With an introduction in corn in 2012, DHT is the next generation to continue showing our technology strength and proving Dow is an industry leader in delivering new, innovative and value creating solutions for growers.

Dow Science Creating Healthier Solutions

Omega-9 Canola and Sunflower Oils, developed by Dow scientists around the world, are the healthier oils solution for the restaurant and foodservice industries. In recent years, U.S. and Canadian restaurants that have converted to Omega-9 Oils have removed nearly 342 million pounds of trans fat and 137 million pounds of saturated fat from the North American diet. This means almost a half billion pounds of “bad” fats have disappeared from our diets.

Sustainable Chemistry=Addressing Challenges of the World

Dow’s 2015 Sustainability Goals are focused on addressing the world’s challenges including feeding a growing population. Dow is ready to accept the challenge of a growing world and the responsibility it brings and it has the best problem solvers working on one of the world’s biggest challenges.
