Dow Building Solutions featured on Think Green Educating Consumers on How to Increase Energy Efficiency of Their Basements

Freezing temperatures are sweeping across North America and this winter, homeowners are reminded more than ever of the rising costs of utilities. So what can you do to help reduce your heating & cooling bills and provide a more comfortable living area for your family?  Start by tuning into Think Green on the WE network.

Recently Dow Building Solutions teamed up with Think Green to develop a segment dedicated to increasing the energy efficiency of basements with some money-saving Do-It-Yourself (DIY) solutions.  John Hammer, residential market manager, Dow Building Solutions North America together with Think Green, designed a segment that walks viewers through a variety of ways to reduce energy consumption and improve home comfort. The program shows viewers an efficient way to insulate a basement. “Homeowners can typically save up to 20 percent of heating and cooling costs by air sealing and adding insulation in cost-effective locations,” Hammer says. “Research has also shown that un-insulated basements are responsible for up to 25 percent of a home’s energy loss. Sealing and insulating your basement is a big step toward reducing your utility bills.”

Hammer notes that this is a great DIY project that doesn’t call for a contractor, and he shows how easy it is to do!  He adds, “Even if you’re living in an existing home with a basement that’s under-insulated or not insulated, you can make a moisture-resistant, insulated wall by using STYROFOAM™ Brand WALLMATE™ Insulation and GREAT STUFF™ Insulating Foam Sealant.** You can lower your energy bills, make your home more comfortable and protect your investment in your house.”

Make sure you tune in to Think Green and Dow Building Solutions as they cover energy-saving tips – from insulating to sealing. The show will air through January 31, 2010 in various cities throughout the United States. If you missed the show don’t worry, you can view it above.
