Final Step Completes Dow’s River Remediation Project Work

Sarnia, Ontario - June 30, 2005

One final step remains to conclude the river-related portion of Dow's sediment removal project. In early July, a six inch layer of "fish mix" which is a granite gravel, about ¼" in size, will be spread over the entire 4,000-foot project site to encourage natural riverbed habitat growth.

A lake freighter carrying 15,000 tons of stone is expected at the Dow site within the next few days. The freighter, en route from Thessalon, Ontario will confirm its arrival time within forty-eight hours of destination but it will be obvious to those at the site and near the river! The freighter will begin dispersing the fish mix by broadcasting it through a spreader starting at the south dock and moving northward. It will make four successive upbound passes over the project area, moving westward with each successive pass. A tugboat will be in the area on stand-by to assist, if necessary, with the freighter's bow location.

In preparation for the arrival of the freighter, approximately 40 floats will be placed in the river, tied by rope, to mark the north-south lanes within which the ship will work. A team from Pollutech and Mackenzie Black will oversee this final phase including the initial placing of floats. Placement of the fish mix is expected to be completed within sixteen hours and, over time, the stone will settle into an even cover due to the movement of the river.

Local marine authorities including the Ministry of Natural Resources have been advised.
