Dow Right on Track With CN and CPR Awards for Excellence in Safety Performance

Fort Saskatchewan and Red Deer, AB - June 30, 2005

Dow Chemical Canada's facilities in Fort Saskatchewan and Prentiss, Alta. have been honoured once again with awards for excellence in rail safety in 2004.

The Canadian National Railway's Safe Handling Award was bestowed upon Dow Chemical Canada for demonstrating its commitment to rail safety by shipping 5,000 cars or more of regulated chemicals across Canada and the U.S. without incident. The Fort Saskatchewan and Prentiss manufacturing sites were also singled out to receive the Canadian Pacific Railway's Chemical Shipper Safety Award for shipping 500 freight carloads or greater of regulated chemicals without incident across Canada and the U.S. on an annual basis. Dow is one of only 22 shippers to receive the CPR Chemical Shipper Safety Award for excellence in 2004.

"Dow's ongoing commitment to protect our employees, communities and the environment is key," said Dave Butler, Fort Saskatchewan site logistics leader. "Effective training in the transportation of dangerous goods is crucial to succeed in safety. Team members at Dow's Fort Saskatchewan and Prentiss sites exercise daily discipline and diligent focus to prevent releases of hazardous materials."

In 2004, Dow shipped approximately 45,000 rail cars of products to various customers in Canada, the U.S. and to other North American Dow sites. These products included polyethylene pellets used to make items such as children's toys, beverage containers and food packaging, and ethylene glycol - a chemical building block used in the manufacture of antifreeze, x-ray film and polyester clothing.

As a member of the Canadian Chemical Producers Association, Dow is committed to Responsible CareĀ®, a set of voluntary initiatives designed to safeguard employees, communities and preserve the environment. This commitment extends from the arrival of supplies on site to the end uses of Dow's products in consumers' lives.

"We've been honoured with these awards many times over the years." said Phil Stewart, Global Rail Sefety and Security, U.S. Department of Transport Regulations Advocacy. "And, every year we win, we feel the same sense of accomplishment. Our teams demonstrate tremendous dedication to safety and best-practices for our employees and communities. In upholding our commitment to daily Responsible Care, Dow contributes to the safety of North American railways."
