Midland, MI - September 30, 2005
Throughout the month of September, Dow employees and retirees generously donated over US$1 million towards the Matching Gift Program for Hurricane Katrina Relief. The donations will be matched by The Dow Chemical Company Foundation. With Hurricane Rita close on the heels of Hurricane Katrina (causing further damage to the U.S. Gulf Coast), the match will go to the American Red Cross Hurricane 2005 Fund. The fund will address needs caused throughout the hurricane season, particularly for Katrina and more recently Rita.
"Once again, our employees and retirees have shown tremendous compassion and generosity to those in need," said Andrew Liveris, president and CEO. "Earlier this year, Dow people responded to the needs of those who suffered from the devastation of the tsunami, and now we are responding to those suffering from hurricanes Katrina and Rita, including many of own employees, retirees and communities. The concern we have for one another and for our communities is reflected in this immediate and great demonstration of generosity. I take great personal pride in being part of this extraordinary company."
On Aug. 31, 2005, Dow pledged $3 million in aid to those affected by Hurricane Katrina. It included a $1 million cash donation to the American Red Cross and another $1 million to match employee and retiree donations. The next segment of the pledge is another $1 million donation in products and technology for the longer-term reconstruction efforts will be initiated in the weeks ahead.
