Midland, MI - September 09, 2006
The Dow Chemical Company today rededicated its Midland manufacturing site, welcoming Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm to a ribbon cutting ceremony at the site. The rededication marked a multi-year effort by the Michigan Operations Manufacturing Site – the birthplace of the company – to regain its former status as an attractive place for Dow businesses to invest.
Granholm was hosted by Dow Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Andrew N. Liveris and joined by Dow employees and leaders, state and local elected officials, as well as business leaders and other dignitaries from the mid-Michigan area.
In his remarks, Liveris highlighted more than $240 million in recent and planned investments in production facilities by several Dow businesses, including Dow AgroSciences, Dow Automotive, DowPharma, Saran Products and the Water Soluble Polymers business.
“The impact of this activity is significant because it translates to the addition of 160 full-time jobs, and retention of at least 45 more, and an overall stronger economy at the local, regional and state level,” said Liveris. “In the past two years, Michigan Operations has attracted many investors to the site by offering strong technical resources, world-class research and development, a flexible workforce, proximity to key markets, outstanding process expertise, as well as other strengths.” Liveris also noted a substantial investment in training and skill advancement of about $10 to $12 million.
“I congratulate Dow and Michigan Operations on this hard-fought turnaround, which is delivering new investments and jobs to our state,” Granholm said. “I share Dow’s commitment to bringing greater economic investment to Michigan so we will remain competitive in today’s global economy.”
Gov. Granholm and Liveris were joined by Eric Friedman, representing Congressman David Camp (R-Midland); Senators Barcia, Goschka and Stamas; Representatives Caul, Kahn and Moolenaar; David Dupre, vice president of Michigan Operations; Kent Holsing, representing Union Local 12075, the United Steelworkers; Midland Mayor Bruce Johnson; and hundreds of employees, contractors and supporters.
