Community-minded Groups Offer Their Visions of Dow Sarnia Legacy Project

Sarnia, ON - September 05, 2007

The Dow Chemical Company’s recently formed Sarnia Legacy Project Steering Committee will be considering proposals from more than 30 local organizations that have offered their visions of what form the company’s major donation to the community, the Dow Sarnia Legacy Project, should take.

The following organizations have responded to Dow’s June invitation and submitted qualifying proposals for a community betterment project that the company could adopt as a $500,000 to $1-million gift to area residents: Big Brothers of Sarnia-Lambton/Big Sisters of Sarnia-Lambton/Sarnia-Lambton Rebound/St. Luke’s United Church; Bluewater Health Foundation; Bluewater Trails Committee; Canadian Blood Services; City of Sarnia; Gallery in the Grove; Gallery Lambton; Geoplast Signs; Goodwill Industries/Essex, Kent, Lambton; Gospel by the Bay; Harmony for Youth; Inn of the Good Shepherd; ISA Sarnia; Junior Achievement of Sarnia Lambton; Mackenzie Clinic; Organization for Literacy Sarnia-Lambton; Pathways Health Centre for Children; Sarnia Boys' Soccer Club; Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School; Sarnia Community Foundation; Sarnia Imperials Football; Sarnia-Lambton Public Sculpture Committee; Sarnia-Lambton Sports Hall of Fame; Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre; St. Clair Secondary School; St. Joseph’s Hospice; Stones ’N Bones Museum; United Way of Sarnia-Lambton; VON Sarnia Lambton; and the YMCA of Sarnia Lambton.

“The response to our legacy project invitation was extremely enthusiastic. Overall, the proposals provide a wide range of possibilities, and reflect very positively on the sponsoring organizations. We are pleased to have so many high-quality proposals from which we will be able to select a project that will provide significant benefit to this community,” said Don Fysh,  site leader for Dow Sarnia.

Each of the qualifying proposals met a series of submission requirements, developed to ensure the successful project would be a permanent undertaking of benefit to a broad cross-section of the residents of Sarnia and managed by a capable and enthusiastic sponsor.

As a first step in the project selection process, the proposals will be considered by the steering committee, consisting of company employees and local residents, which will offer its top five choices for Dow’s consideration. An announcement of the committee’s recommendations is expected later this month. The successful legacy project will be determined by late 2007 or early 2008.

The Dow Sarnia Legacy Project will recognize Dow’s 65-year history of local operations. Dow came to Sarnia in 1942 in response to an invitation from the Canadian government to help manufacture synthetic rubber for the war effort. The Sarnia site was the company’s first manufacturing location outside of the United States.
