Dow Introduces New Grade of NORDEL™ MG Hydrocarbon Rubber
New EPDM Product Delivers Superior Performance in Low Temperatures, as well as Significant Processing and Economic Benefits

Midland, MI - October 11, 2006

The Dow Chemical Company today introduced NORDEL™ MG NDR 46100.00 Hydrocarbon Rubber, filling the market need for an EPDM product that delivers superior performance for applications in which excellent low-temperature properties are required.

Produced using Dow’s proprietary INSITE™ metallocene catalyst technology and a gas-phase production process, NORDEL MG NDR 46100.00 is a low-ethylene, medium-ethylidene-norbornene (ENB), high-viscosity grade: 55 wt.% ethylene, 4.5 wt.% ENB, 100 MU (ML 1+4 at 125°C, calculated). These characteristics make the new product ideal for peroxide-cured building profiles, hoses, bicycle tire tread, automotive weatherstrip and other rubber products that require superior performance in low temperatures.

“INSITE™ technology makes it possible for Dow to control molecular design with precision and predictability,” says Dave Kyle, Sr. Automotive Market Manager, North America, The Dow Chemical Company. “This allows us to produce polymers, such as NORDEL™ MG NDR 46100.00, that deliver the exact characteristics required to meet specific market needs – like superior performance in low temperatures.”

Unmatched Processing Productivity and Economics

The gas-phase reaction process and granular form of all NORDEL™ MG products allow for the creation of high-Mooney-viscosity (greater than 90 ML1+4 at 125°C) polymers that offer significant improvements in bulk handling and processing productivity and economics.

  • The presence of carbon black and the granular form of the product means it requires no oil extension to facilitate manufacturing.
  • Processors can add their own oil to improve processing characteristics and reduce costs.
  • Due to their lower bulk density than baled rubber and some pelletized rubber, NORDEL™ MG products will be compacted, rather than crushed, at the beginning of the mixing cycle – enhancing mixing by allowing fill factors to increase by up to 10 volume percent.
  • Eliminating the need to crush and break up material into small pieces at the beginning of the cycle for carbon black incorporation results in shorter black incorporation time (BIT) and total cycle time.
  • The granular form improves dispersion of compounding ingredients and enables single-pass mixing in many formulations.
  • The consistency of NORDEL™ MG products increases processing yields while reducing scrap.
  • The granular form also allows automated bulk handling and the potential for continuous compounding, resulting in lower-cost production, cleaner processes, reduced labor costs and elimination of packaging waste.

NORDEL™ MG NDR 46100.00 is being produced at the Company’s world-class manufacturing facility in Seadrift, Texas, and is now available to customers throughout the world. For more information about NORDEL™ MG NDR 46100.00, readers can visit www.dow.com, or call:
