Dow Building Solutions, a business group of The Dow Chemical Company, today announced it had broken ground on a new facility in the city of LaPorte, Texas. The new facility will manufacture STYROFOAM™ brand insulation.
The new facility in LaPorte, which is approximately 30 miles southeast of Houston, will be part of an existing manufacturing site Dow operates in the city.
This new plant will provide Dow with production capacity required to transition its entire North American STYROFOAM manufacturing asset base to next generation insulating formulations, consistent with proposed federal requirements anticipated to take effect in 2010.
In addition, this new plant will enhance Dow's ability to meet local customer needs for residential and commercial construction insulation products in the rapidly growing geographic areas of Texas and the southwest.
"As energy costs escalate, so, too, do heating and air conditioning bills," said Kostas Katsoglou, president, Dow Building Solutions. "Products such as STYROFOAM brand insulation contribute to energy conservation, which helps address the energy demand issues currently facing the U.S., and, at the same time, lowers the cost to heat and cool buildings."
Attendees included representatives of local government and economic development bodies, including the Honorable Alton E Porter, Mayor of LaPorte and Jan Lawler, President and CEO of Economic Alliance.
Financial details related to the project were not disclosed.
