Midland, MI - June 14, 2007
A newly installed water treatment system, incorporating ADSORBSIA™ GTO™ arsenic removal media from Dow Water Solutions, is reducing arsenic levels in water supplied to homes and businesses in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, New Mexico. The water system, operated by New Mexico Utilities and serving approximately 50,000 people, is designed to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (“EPA’s”) recent more stringent standard for arsenic in drinking water.
“As more municipalities work towards meeting the EPA regulation, ADSORBSIA GTO media is able to provide a reliable, cost-effective and flexible option that is especially well suited for large systems such as this one,” said Alan Greenberg, senior marketing development manager, Dow Water Solutions. “ADSORBSIA media can also operate efficiently in previously installed equipment that was designed for other media, a feature that contributed to the smooth installation and successful start-up of this system.”
Effective January 2006, the EPA reduced acceptable arsenic levels in drinking water to below 10 parts per billion (ppb). Arsenic levels at New Mexico Utilities’ well #9 were as high as 19 ppb prior to the installation of the new arsenic removal system. The use of ADSORBSIA™ GTO™ media in the 20-tank system is designed to reduce arsenic levels at the well to below 8 ppb. The well can produce up to 2 million gallons of potable water per day.
New Mexico Utilities, having experience with other arsenic removal media, selected ADSORBSIA titanium-based media based on both exceptional economics and improved reliability.
ADSORBSIA GTO media is a high-capacity non-regenerable single-use product, which is affordable, easy to operate and eliminates the need for disposal of arsenic-laden waste regenerant streams. The nanocrystalline structure of ADSORBSIA leads to faster kinetics, allowing for smaller diameter vessels and a smaller system footprint.
“Compared with other commercially available arsenic removal media, ADSORBSIA media has improved overall performance, including a higher adsorptive capacity and a faster flow rate. These factors enable existing systems to run free from operational hassles,” continued Greenberg.
Designed and commercialized by Dow Water Solutions, ADSORBSIA™ media is one of many innovative products that underscore Dow’s strategy to strengthen its Performance business portfolio by prioritizing marketing and application development activities that support high-value, end-use applications. The technology also exemplifies Dow’s commitment to improve access to higher quality, affordable and sustainable water supplies for communities and industries worldwide.
